Abstract

Trioxane mixed with 1 to 50% 1,3-dioxolane is copolymerized at 0 DEG to 80 DEG C. under the action of high energy radiation with a dose rate of 103 to 109 rad/hour. The copolymerization may take place in solution, suspension or mass, the trioxane being present at least partially in the solid state in the last case. The polymerization temperature is preferably between the melting point of the trioxane or the monomer mixture and 10 DEG below this melting point. Fillers such as glass fibres, asbestos, metal oxides and metal powders may be added before or during polymerization. Stabilizers, such as phenols and urea-, hydrazine-, amidine- and amide derivatives, may also be added. Examples are given using up to 15% dioxolane.
