Abstract

A method of improving the resistance to stress cracking due to the environment, of crystalline polyethylene that has a density greater than about 0.93 g/cc characterized by densifying said polyethylene by feeding it in powder form to a continuous mixer, and heating it in this to melting in the presence of about 0.10 to 1.0 percent, by weight of said polyethylene powder, of an aqueous solution of sodium benzoate having a concentration such that by evaporation of the water at the melting temperature of the polyethylene, incorporates into said molten polyethylene by discharging from said mixer an amount of sodium benzoate comprised between approximately 0.1 and approximately 1.0 weight percent of the polyethylene, and recovering said polyethylene containing said sodium benzoate in solid form, cooling said molten polyethylene.
