Abstract

<PICT:1104373/C6-C7/1> In a cell for the electrolysis of sea water to produce hypochlorite for cooling purposes in power stations, a plurality of parallel bi-polar electrodes 20 supported along two parallel edges by slots in a casing 23 have insulating extender plates 24 of electrolyte resistant material e. g. polymethylmethacrylate secured to the opposite edges to prevent corrosion, to increase the current leakage path between cells, and to guide the circulating electrolyte. The extender plates diverge outwardly from the electrodes so that electrolyte circulated through the cells from inlet 25 to outlet 26 is speeded up through the cells. With the inlet and outlet horizontal, the cell is inclined to the vertical so that the extender plates reduce turbulence. Sewage may be mixed with sea water for treatment in the cell.
