Abstract

Alpha-ethylenically unsaturated monomers are polymerized by heating to the activation temperature of the catalyst a heterogenous aqueous medium comprising an aqueous solution of a surface-active agent as the continuous phase and a solution in the monomer of a catalytic amount of an O,O-tert.-alkyl O-alkyl monoperoxycarbonate, containing up to 6 carbon atoms in the tert.-alkyl group and up to 8 carbon atoms in the alkyl group, as the discontinuous phase. The monomer may be styrene, vinyl or vinylidene chloride, vinyl acetate, methylacrylate or methacrylate, ethyl acrylate or acrylonitrile with optionally vinylidene chloride or butadiene and styrene. The catalyst may be O,O-tert.-(butyl or amyl) O-isopropyl monoperoxycarbonate with optionally ditert.-butyl peroxide and tert.-butyl hydroperoxide or sodium bisulphite or dithionite. The surface-active agent may be sodium lauryl sulphate or gelatine.
