Abstract
In a process for the electrolytic recovery and refining of metals e.g. copper or zinc, comprising electrolytically depositing the metal upon precipitation electrodes in a bath at least initially without agitation e.g. until deposition of the metal renders the electrode sufficiently rigid to withstand circulation of the electrolyte, and subsequently processing electrode and deposit together, e.g. melting the metal for the casting thereof, the precipitation electrodes are formed of paper or like electrically non-conducting material which will not introduce undesirable impurities into the metal during the further processing thereof, said electrodes being rendered conductive by an electrically conductive material being incorporated therein or coated thereon, which conductive material likewise introduces no undesirable impurities into the melt, e.g. graphite or the material to be deposited may be used. The electrodes may be corrugated to enhance rigidity thereof. The metal may also be deposited upon the connections supporting the electrodes to render them sufficiently strong to carry the final weight of the electrodes.
