Abstract

1,103,790. Cutting by fusion. GOSUDARSTVENY SOJUZNY INSTITUT PROJEKTIROVANYA METALLOURGITCHESKIKH ZAVADOV. 26 Aug., 1966 [26 Feb., 1966; 28 April, 1966], No. 38400/66. Heading B3V. Apparatus for severing a continuous casting 2 comprises a cutting torch 9 mounted on a carriage 7 movable longitudinally with the casting and also perpendicular thereto for effecting the cut, and a sensor element 15 which engages the side of the casting and maintains the correct spacing of the torch therefrom. The casting moves vertically and is severed by two torches 9, 10 movable in opposite directions across the casting. The torches are mounted on carriages 7, 8 driven through nut and lead screw mechanism 11, 12 by electric motors 13 with gear-boxes 14. The carriages run in guides on a plate 3 mounted on a table 1 movable longitudinally in synchronism with the casting. To ensure correct spacing of the torches, a spring- loaded sensor 15 engages the side of the casting and is. connected through rack-and-pinion mechanism 18, 19 and shaft 20 with a control apparatus 21. This emits signals to control an electric motor 22 which acts through gear-box 23, lead-screw 24 and nut 26 to move the plate 3 towards or from the casting and thus maintain correct spacing of the nozzles. The movements of the carriages 7, 8 and of the plate 3 may alternatively be effected by chains, cables or hydraulic jacks.
