Abstract

1,103,071. Miners cap lamps. OLDHAM & SON Ltd., and H. MORTON. 19 Feb., 1965 [21 Feb., 1964], No. 7431/64. Heading F4R. In a miners' cap lamp the switches controlling the current supply to the bulb, and the movement of the reflector relative to the bulb to focus the lamp, are both controlled by rotation of the lens ring. The lens ring 4 is rotatably held in the mouth of the lamp body 1 by an anchor cable 16 which is located in co-operating grooves 17, 18 in the ring and body and the tension of which is adjustable by means of a screw and nut which can be turned by a suitable key. The ring has keyways 13 engaged by projections 12 on the rim 9 of a reflector mounting 8, which includes a sleeve 40 surrounding the fixed bulb socket 31 and having inwardly projecting tracking pins 41 engaging a guide groove 39 out around the outer surface of the socket. Rotation of the mounting 8 with the ring 4 causes the pins 41 to move along the groove 39 so that the mounting and the reflector 3 are displaced axially relative to the bulb 26. The sleeve 40 has diametrically opposite slots 42 engaging co-operating bosses 43 on the cylindrical flange 44 of a rotatable switch actuating member retained against axial movement on the socket 31 by a spring clip 44a, so that the switch actuating member is also rotated by the lens ring 4. The switches are fixed to a back-plate 27 and comprise resilient strips adapted to be pressed into engagement by projections 46, 47 on the actuating member. Preferably, there are three switches arranged in series between the terminals of the supply battery, and the bulb 26 has two filaments respectively connected in parallel with two of the switches. During one complete rotation of the actuating member by the lens ring a switching sequence is performed twice, each sequence including the steps of lighting the first filament, connecting both filaments to the battery in series, lighting the second filament and again connecting both filaments in series. The guide groove 39 and the projections 46, 47 are so shaped that the complete focusing operation takes place at each setting of the switches. In one modification, the bulb has only a single filament, and in a further modification the reflector mounting 8 is fixed to the lens ring and the bulb socket 31 is slidable axially relative to the plate 27. The reflector may take the form of a reflecting coating on the mounting 8, which is then of parabolic shape.
