Abstract

In a process for the control of the polymerization of ethylene at pressures above 500 atmospheres and at a temperature of 50 DEG to 400 DEG C. in the presence of a radical forming initiator in a tubular reactor in which a number of temperature sensing devices are mounted and in which the pressure is temporarily reduced by 5 to 25% impulse-wise, temperature levels are assigned to the reactor at the locations of the temperature sensing devices which levels correspond to the normal course of the reaction, and the pressure reduction is effected only when the temperature measured by one of the devices deviates from the assigned temperature by 5 DEG to 30 DEG C. Apparatus suitable for carrying out the process of the invention is described and illustrated, and the polymerization of ethylene in the presence of t-butyl perbenzoate is described.
