Abstract

Ethylene is polymerized at a pressure of at least 5000 p.s.i.g by continuously pumping ethylene through an elongated tubular reactor maintained at such reaction conditions as to produce a mixture of solid polyethylene and unreacted ethylene, additional ethylene being introduced, at a temperature below that prevailing in the reactor, into the reactor at a plurality of points intermediate its inlet and outlet ends so that the peak temperature of the reaction mixture is maintained below that at which an explosive reaction occurs. The polymerization may be carried out at pressures of at least 15,000 p.s.i.g. and temperatures above 200 DEG C. in the presence of less than 300 p.p.m. of oxygen as catalyst. An elongated tubular reactor is described and illustrated by a drawing (not shown).
