Abstract
An olefinically unsaturated monomer is polymerized in an aqueous suspension that comprises a composite suspending agent which is a mixture of a water-soluble cellulose derivative, e.g. a hydroxyalkyl cellulose, and a copolymer of N-vinylpyrrolidone with an ester of acrylic or an a -substituted acrylic acid. The monomer may be styrene, which may be copolymerized with butadiene or acrylonitrile. Benzoyl peroxide may be present as a catalyst. The suspending agent may be hydroxyethyl cellulose and a copolymer of N-vinyl-pyrrolidone with methyl acrylate. Pentane may be present during the polymerization and the resulting polymer beads may be foamed by exposure to steam and then formed into an article by heating.
