Abstract

Cotton and cellulosic materials are dyed with direct dyes by podding processes in the presence of an alcohol of limited solubility in water, i.e. at least 12.5 parts by weight one soluble in 100 parts by weight of water at room temperature and which alcohols have boiling points of above 99 DEG C at 760 mm Hg. Podsteam with intermittent drying if desired, podroll, cold dwelling processes and processes in which moist goods are fixed by dry heating are employed. In addition alcohols which are readily soluble in water may be present in the podding liquor. Examples of alcohols of limited solubility in water are benzyl alcohol, cyclohexanol, phenylethanol, phenoxyethanol, methylphenoxyethanol, n-butyl alcohol, secbutyl alcohol, iso-butyl alcohol, and iso-nonyl alcohol.
