Abstract

The image on a lithographic printing plate is reinforced by treatment with an emulsified lacquer composition in which the dispersed phase comprises a resin compound, formed by reaction of a chloromethylated diphenyl oxide with a phenolic compound, dissolved in a solvent which is immiscible with the dispersing phase of the emulsion. The solvent may be methyl isobutyl ketone, di-isobutyl ketone, ethyl isoamyl ketone, cyclohexanone, amylacetate, methoxy-butyl acetate, or "Cellosolve" (Registered Trade Mark) acetate. The solvent in the dispersing phase may be water, glycerol, ethylene glycol, other aliphatic polyhydric alcohol, or mixtures thereof. There may also be added (1) a lithographic desensitizing agent such as phosphoric acid or salts thereof including hexamethaphosphates, citric acid or salts thereof, silicic acid or salts thereof including colloidal silica, gum arabic, carboxymethyl cellulose, (2) a colourant to render the image visible, such as a dye or pigment, (3) a thickening agent such as polyvinyl alcohol or methyl cellulose, (4) a wetting or emulsifying agent, (5) a fungicide or bactericide, such as phenolic preservatives.
