Abstract
799,102. Planographic printing plate developers. MINNESOTA MINING & MANUFACTURING CO. June 26,1956. No. 19818/56. Class 98(2) The developer, whose function is to colour ink-receptive areas of a printing plate of the diazo-resin or dichromatealbumen type to render them visible for inspection, and to ensure ink and water receptivity in the respective areas, comprises a coloured two-phase liquid composition having an aqueous phase comprising water and a soluble thickener, and a non- aqueous liquid resinous phase comprising an unmodified hydroxyl-containing resinous glycidyl polyether of a dihydric phenol and a water-immersible solvent. In Example 1 the aqueous phase is a gum arabic solution with wetting agent if desired, and this is combined in a mixer with the non- aqueous phase of an epichlorohydrin-bisphenol (soft epoxy) resin with touidine toner as pigment in ethylene dichloride/ cyclohexanone solvent to produce a waterin-oil type emulsion. Six further examples describe very similar compositions, some of which are of oil-in-water type, and the manner of production of the resins themselves is indicated. In use the compositions are wiped over an exposed diazoresin plate after this has been subjected to a photographic development with aqueous gum arabic, or over a dichromate-albumen plate directly after exposure for subsequent removal of unexposed areas, when the plates are ready for printing using any ordinary ink and fountain water and have superior wear resistance or the plates may be coated with gum arabic for storage. Specification 718,525 is referred to.
