Abstract
1,101,442. Spring suspensions for cycles. MOULTON CONSULTANTS Ltd. 18 March, 1966 [18 March, 1965], No. 11576/65. Heading B7E. A rear-wheel suspension system for a two wheeled cycle comprises an oval section frame member 1 which extends rearwardly from the pedal crank axle housing 3 and is closed by a plate 4 formed with apertured lugs 5, the system also including trailing arms 6 on which the rear wheel 2 is mounted at 2a and which are bridged at their-leading ends by a hollow tube 7 aligned with the lugs 5 and through which a bolt 8 passes to form a pivot for the trailing arms, there being a rubber compression spring 10 operating between frame member 1 and the trailing arms 6 to control the pivotal movement. The spring 10 comprising a rubber block bonded between metal plates 10a and 10b is fixed between a surface 4a of plate 4 and a surface 9a of a bracket 9 fixed to the upperside of arms 6 and the tube 7. A bolt 12 passing through the spring and surfaces 9a and 4a has nuts 11 and 13 at each end limiting the pivotal movement. In the embodiment of Fig. 2 (not shown), the rubber compression spring is wedge shaped and (7) has an internal hollow rubber sleeve (24) having in its bore a metal sleeve (25) through which bolt (8) passes. This arrangement provides cushioning between the pivot bolt (8) and trailing arms (6). In the embodiment of Figs. 3 and 4 (not shown), rubber spring (40) has an integral bush portion (41), which passes through an aperture in bracket member (42). Also the hollow tube (7) is provided internally with bearing sleeves (48) and a spacer tube (49) through which the pivot bolt (8) passes.
