Abstract

1,101,246. Slotting apparatus. HENRY SIMON Ltd. 10 Nov., 1966 [24 Nov., 1905], No. 49834/65. Heading B4B. Apparatus for slotting box blanks comprises a plurality of knife assemblies 10 mounted on a rotatable main shaft 11 and each including a flanged hub 12 rotatable with the shaft and having a knife element 13 fixed thereto, an internally geared annulus 14 mounted coaxially on the hub 12 so as to be freely rotatable thereon and having a knife element 15 fixed thereto, a pinion 17 meshing with the teeth of the annulus 14 and a pinion shaft 18 coaxial with the pinions 17 and rotationally fixed thereto, a brake ring 19 provided on the annulus 14 of the knife assembly 10a, or an annulus (29), Fig. 3 (not shown), of an equivalent assembly not equipped with knife elements but to which the pinion shaft (18) extends, and a brake shoe 20 carried by an extension 21 of the fixed main frame 22 of the apparatus and arranged so that it can be brought into engagement with the brake ring 19 to prevent it from rotating with the assembly on which it is carried so that rotation of the shaft 11 will cause the associated pinion and pinion shaft to rotate and thereby through the intermediaries of the pinions of the, or of the other knife assemblies move the associated annuli rotationally relative to the flanged hubs thereby changing the circumferential spacing of all the in-line knife elements. The brake is preferably engaged by remote control. A friction clutch 23, 24, 25 is provided to prevent the pinion shaft 18 from rotating relative to the knife assemblies when the brake is out of action. The knife assemblies and associated pinions are axially slidable on the pinion shaft. The pinion shaft is provided with means 32 whereby it can be turned by a handtool. A scale or pointer associated with the brake ring extension of a geared annulus is set against a pointer or scale associated with the hub, to indicate the amount by which the knife elements of the associated knife assemblies are circumferentially spaced. Alternatively, the circumferential spacing of the knife elements of the knife assemblies may be adjusted simultaneously by adjusting the main shaft rotationally relative to its driving means and the blank feeding mechanism associated therewith. For this purpose, a driving gearwheel 33 is rotationally fixed to the shaft 11 through the intermediary of gearing elements 34 supported from the flange 35 of a hub member 36 which is keyed to the shaft 11, the elements 34 being operable by an electric motor 37 actuation of which causes the hub member 36 and the shaft 11 to rotate slowly relative to the gear wheel 33. A scale 38 associated with the gear wheel 33 is set against a similar scale 39 associated with the shaft 11 and its hub members 12 to show the amount by which the knife elements are circumferentially spaced.
