Abstract
717,730. Slotting apparatus. DERITEND ENGINEERING CO., Ltd. Nov. 16, 1953 [Nov. 14, 1952], No. 28714/52. Addition to 696,390. Class 31 (1). In apparatus for slotting cardboard and like blanks for the manufacture of boxes incorporating four cutting units each comprising two inner and two outer annuli 8, 9, 8a, 9a carrying male and female knives respectively, each cutting unit is independently adjustable along a main shaft 7, or 7a, i.e. transversely to the direction of travel of the blanks through the apparatus, by means of rotatable but non- axially slidable nuts 31, or 31a, located within the inner annulus of the cutting unit and engaging with screw-threaded shafts 30, or 30a, held from rotation about their own axes. The shaft 7, or 7a, has keyed thereto a main driving pinion 11, or 11a, which meshes with a pinion 11a, or 11. The pinion 11, or 11 a has secured thereto the ends of the shafts 30, or 30a, the opposite ends of which are located within a pinion 14, or 14a. Four lateral adjustment pinions 32 to 35, or 32a to 35a, are mounted about a sleeve portion 12, or 12a of the pinion 11, or 11a, and each meshes internally with a pinion 36, or 36a on one of four spindles 37, or 37a which pass through the pinion 11, or 11a through apertures in the inner annulus 8, or 8a, and have their opposite ends located within a pinion 14, or 14a. Each spindle 37 is rotated by means of dogs 42 thereon, which engage with dogs on a crank handle, and drive the corresponding nuts 31 through the intermediary of pinions 39 to 41. The pinion 11, or 11a has secured thereto the ends of driving rods 13, or 13a, which pass through apertures in the inner annulus 8, or 8a and have their opposite ends located within the pinion 14, or 14a. An annular pinion 15, or 15a is mounted on a shoulder of the pinion 11, or 11a, and is slotted to receive the ends of a rod 16, or 16a, which passes through an aperture in the outer annulus 9, or 9a, and has its opposite end located within an annular pinion 17, or 17a, mounted on a shoulder of the pinion 14, or 14a. The means for impairing relative rotation to each pair of male knives and each pair of female knives simultaneously is indicated at A, Fig. 2, and comprises a pair of pinions 18, 19, Fig. 3, which mesh respectively with the pinions 11a, 15a. The pinion 18 is keyed to a driving shaft 20 and the pinion 19 is keyed to a non-axially slidable sleeve 21 which is provided with a quick pitch thread meshing with a corresponding thread on the shaft 20. The shaft 20 is moved axially by means of handles 24 to effect relative rotation between the pinions 18, 19 and hence relative rotation between the pinions 11a, 15a which effects relative rotation between the inner annuli and the outer annuli of all the cutting units. The feed mechanism associated with the apparatus is operated by a cam 43, Fig. 1, which is connected to a pinion 44 which is driven from the pinion 14a by means B, Fig. 2, which permit of relative rotation between the two pinions. This means comprises a non-axially slidable sleeve 45, Fig. 4, in mesh with the pinion 14a and keyed to a shaft 47 which has a quick thread engaging a corresponding thread on the interior of a non-axially slidable sleeve 49 which carries a pinion 50 in mesh with the pinion 44. Axial movement of the shaft 47 by means of the handles 51 causes relative rotation between the pinions 45 and 50 and hence relative rotation between the pinions 14a and 44 to adjust the timing of the feed mechanism to the timing of the knives of the apparatus.
