Abstract
1,101,076. Splints. E.P.S. (RESEARCH & DEVELOPMENT) Ltd. 22 Feb., 1965 [10 April, 1964], No. 14953/64. Heading A5R. [Also in Division A4]. An inflatable splint comprises an envelope formed from polyethylene tubing 1, the transverse edges of which are sealed by complementary, interengageable polyethylene male and female fastener strips 2, 3. A clasp 20 for mating the strips is threaded on a cord 19 secured to the envelope. The envelope is inflated through a valve (Fig. 3) comprising a tube (9) which supports a valve member (10) having a stem (14) carrying a cross-piece (17). The cross-piece is manipulated to abut the end of the tube to hold the valve closed or to enter slots 18 in the tube to open the valve. The splint, opened out and inflated, may serve as a lifejacket or cushion. Several envelopes may be interconnected by the fastener elements to form a layer splint which, when opened out, may serve as a mattress.
