The base of an external container 3 for a vacuum flask consists of an inwardly recessed part 4 and a central aperture 5 on the lip of which is supported a closure 6, having a peripheral flange 7 on which the conventional liner 1 rests, and in which is received the evacuation pip 2. The container 3, its base 4 and closure 6 are of moulded synthetic plastics material, e.g. polystyrene.
