Abstract
<PICT:1100814/C6-C7/1> Metal powder such as steel containing up to 10% of arc stabilizers is formed into wire e.g. of square section in a process comprising rolling the powder between a first pair of profiled rollers to form a wafer, rerolling in at least one further pair of profiled rollers to effect at least 20% reduction in cross-section of the wafer, separating the wire shaped parts of the wafer e.g. by using a profiled gang slitter and working the wire shaped parts to wires of the desired profile. The profiled rollers have a plurality of parallel peripheral grooves as shown in Fig. 2 and a diameter at least 50 times the largest dimension of the profile of the wafer, the spacing between centre lines of adjacent grooves of profiled rollers of the further pair being equal to the spacing between the centre lines of adjacent grooves of the first pair. The densified wafer is preferably sintered at 1100 DEG C. in a nitrogen-hydrogen atmosphere prior to the slitting operation. The powders specified are Fe; Fe + 2% FeMn + 1.5%FeSi; Fe + 2%FeMn + 1.5%FeSi + 2% TiO2 + 2%SiO2.
