A machine of the kind comprising an article transport mechanism for the conveyance and transfer of articles undergoing manufacture or treatment from one place to another comprises an endless belt conveyer 1 and a transfer member 2 (Fig. 1) in the form of a star wheel or disc 4 (Fig. 2), with recesses 5, at each of a pair of filling stations A, B. The disc 4 is angularly oscillated through 90 degrees alternate empty containers (plain circles in Fig. 1) fed to station A being filled and the remainder by-passed. The remaining empty containers are filled at station B, the already filled containers (shaded circles in Fig. 1) being by-passed. The stations A, B are synchronized. A leaf-spring 23 and sensing switch 24 detect the presence of a container in proximity to the transfer disc 4 and when a timing switch (26), Fig. 4 (not shown), closes, a solenoid 22 operates to open a gate 21 which remains open having operated a holding switch 25. When the line of containers is interrupted the sensing switch de-energizes the solenoid 22 and the gate closes. Containers at the filling and by-pass stations, respectively X, Y in Fig. 2, are (alternately) lifted out of the recesses 5 to enable the transfer disc 4 to make its return movement, Fig. 3 (not shown).
