Abstract
1,100,564. Arc extinguishing in switches; gas blast switches. E. LANGE. 15 Jan., 1965 [22 Jan., 1964], No. 1793/65. Heading H1N. In an electric circuitbreaker the electrodes 8, 7, 9 are made of a material comprising a physical combination of metallic and gas-evolving non-metallic substances. The non- metallio substances are such as to evolve electronegative gases when subjected to the heat of the arc. For instance P.T.F.E. and sulphur may produce sulphur fluorides. Other suitable non-metallic substances are the silicofluorides of barium, calcium, sodium, ammonia, copper or lead. The metallic substances may be resistant to the arc, for example molybdenum or tungsten. The physical combination may be achieved by sintering powder mixtures; by melting and casting the substances together; or by superimposing them in layers. The arc chamber 1 may be sealed and charged with the electronegative gas before operation; the chamber comprises several compartments 4, 5 (13, 14, 22, Fig. 2, not shown) and flow of the gas from one to another extinguishes the arc.
