Abstract

In a process for the preparation of vinyl acetate by reacting acetylene and acetic acid in the presence of catalyst such as zinc acetate, make-up acetylene is added to the vapour stream from the reaction zone, which is then contacted with liquid acetic acid in an absorption zone and the acetylene leaving the absorption zone recycled to the reaction zone. The absorber removes most of the vinyl acetate, acetaldehyde, other trace organic compounds and water, and these are then removed from the acetic acid in an acid recovery column. An example describes the process with the aid of a flow diagram.
