Abstract

Punching.-Apparatus for controlling the relative movements of structural shapes or beams and mechanism for punching the same comprises rolls 1 driven by a motor 9 for conveying the work x past the punching mechanism 10, a stop 15 on a rack-bar 16 engaged by a pinion 18 on a shaft 19, and a number of members 40, 65, 69, 74 adapted to be moved by a travelling member 26 on the shaft 19 and controlled bv settable distance-devices such as keys 45, 68, 71, 76, whereby the stop 15 is advanced a distance determined by the setting of the keys. The shaft 19 rotates in a casing 23 provided with an interior thread 24 engaged by a thread 27 on the member 26, which is mounted on a squared portion of the shaft. A sleeve 28 on the member 26 has a stop-piece 29 and forms a bearing for a cylinder 30 provided with a threaded sleeve 31 passing through a nut 33. The nut 33 has an arm 34 projecting through a slot in the casing 23 and connected to a slidable plate 40 supporting a plate 44, in which are mounted keys 45 corresponding to a distance de. nomination. The keys are vertically reciprocable in the plates 44, 48, and 40 and, when set, engage slots in a slidable plate 65, the length of the slots being proportional to the distance value of the keys set. The set key is locked by a spring plate 48, which engages the upper surface of a coned shoulder 47 on the key stem, and is released when another key, in being set, deflects the plate 48 against its spring. Other sets of keys 68, 71, 76, denoting different distance denominations, are similarly mounted in slidable plates 65, 69, 74, and, when set, engage slots in plates below those in which they are mounted, the last plates 78 engaged by the keys 76 being fixed. Fractions of the lowest unit of distance are denoted by keys 99 reciprocably mounted in plates 91, 100, and a plate 90 fixed to the nut 33. The keys, when set, engage slots 101 - - 104 in the cylinder proportional in length to the values of the keys. When the members 26, 30, 33 have moved along the shaft 19 a distance corresponding to the value of the set keys 45, 68, &c., the plates 40, 65, &c., and nut 33 stop, and for the movement of the member 26 overcomes a spring 107 and brings crown teeth 106 on the member 26 into mesh with teeth 105 on the cylinder 30. The cylinder is thereby rotated until the set key 99 reaches the end of the slot 101, &c., and the cylinder advances relatively to the nut 33. The plates 40, 65, &c., are drawn together by a spring-pressed rod 109. When the punching is completed, the controlling apparatus may be restored to starting position by a motor 120. The starting and stopping of the motors 9, 120 and the setting of the keys may be controlled by a distance-record device such as a perforated strip, as described in Specification 12139/15.
