[Also in Division Gl] An instrument for measuring fluid flow comprises a vaned shaft 3 journalled in a housing 1, a permanent magnet 5 mounted in the shaft, and a protective gas switch 7 (i.e. a magnetically-operated switch disposedin an atmosphere of protective gas) mounted in the housing parallel to the shaft, the leads of the switch extending to the exterior of the instrument for connection to a counting or recording mechanism. The magnet is preferably of semicircular shape. The switch contacts close each time the magnet is rotated by the varied shaft, so that the fluid velocity can be calculated from the number of current pulses received by the counting mechanism per unit of time.
