Abstract
109,968. Soc. Anon. la Photogravure Rotative. Sept. 27, 1916, [Convention date]. Intaglio-plate printing; printing-surfaces; etching.-Relates to the printing of letterpress matter by the intaglio method, in which the printing plates or cylinders, including the letterpress, are usually produced by the aid of a screen, so that the edges of the characters are serrated or uneven as illustrated in the enlarged view in Fig. 1. To avoid this, the letterpress is etched without the screen so that plain edged intaglio characters are produced as shown in Figs. 4 and 5, and the etched characters are also roughened so as to retain the printing-ink a, Fig. 4. This roughening may be effected by using a suitable etching-fluid, such as iron perchloride and chromic acid, or alternatively, the roughening may be effected by mechanical or other suitable means, such as by sand blast.
