Abstract

Wax-like copolymers of 99-50 weight per cent of ethylene and 1-50 weight per cent of crotonic acid and having a melting point in the range 60-115 DEG C. and a melt viscosity in the range 100 to 100,000 centistokes at 120 DEG C. may be prepared by copolymerizing the monomers at 50-250 DEG C. and pressure of 200-950 atmospheres in the presence of an organic solvent and a free radical catalyst. Modifiers, e.g. hydrogen, may be present and the reaction may be effected batchwise or continuously. Specified solvents are hydrocarbons, ethers, esters, ketones and alcohols. Specified catalysts are dialkyl and diacyl peroxides, alkyl hydroperoxides, peresters and azo compounds. Examples describe the copolymerization of ethylene and crotonic acid in benzene in the presence of (2 and 12) azodiisobutyronitrile, (3 and 5-7) benzoyl peroxide, (8 and 9) benzoyl peroxide and hydrogen, (4 and 11) di-t.-butyl peroxide, and (10 and 13) di-t.-butyl peroxide and hydrogen.
