Dust-laden gas to be cleaned is introduced into the cleaning apparatus through a conduit 1 opening into a convergent portion 4 irrigated with liquid overflowing from an annular chamber 2 surrounding the portion 4 and covered by a baffle 6 with a skirt 14 extending in the gap between the conduit 1 and the portion 4 to provide a channel for liquid overflowing from the chamber 2 and a channel through which the flow of gas through the conduit 1 induces a flow of air from atmosphere through a gap 5 between a flange 15 of the outer wall 8 of chamber 2 and a cover 7. The surface of the convergent portion 4 may be coated with a silicone. The main cleaning apparatus may comprise a centrifugal separator, a venturi-scrubber or perforated plates supporting layers of foam.
