Abstract
1,098,174. Photo-electric bottle inspection. FORDS (FINSBURY) Ltd. Sept.2, 1964 [Sept. 2, 1963], No.34548/63. Heading G1A. Foreign bodies in transparent bottles are detected as the bottles supported upon a rotating pedestal and illuminated with diffused light pass in turn in front of a vertical stack of photo-cells which scan the side walls of the bottle through a vertical slit moving in concert with each bottle. Lenses may focus an image of the bottle wall on the photo-cells or the photo-cells may be so close to the slit as to obviate the lenses. A moving lens focuses, for a short interval, a stationary image of the bottom of the bottle on a fixed photocell as it passes beneath, a diffused light-source illuminating the bottle from below. In Fig. 1, which shows a plan view of the apparatus, bottles 30 are successively fed by the star wheel 2 on to pedestals 8 where they are clamped and rotate as they come within the field of view of the vertical stack of photo-cells 41, as determined by the adjustable opening 4, or a series of vertically arranged openings, 44. The moving slits 40 and moving stack of lenses 42 permit the photo-cells to view only a small portion of the bottle wall at any one time, a foreign body present then causes a signal from the photo-cells which passes via analyzing circuitry to a memory device to subsequently operate a reject mechanism. The individual photo-cells have differing sensitivity to reduce the effect of moulded in names and ridges and the analyzing circuitry distinguishes between foreign body signals and those from expected variations in glass thickness. The bottom of the bottle is inspected as it passes over a diffused light-source 47 and beneath a fixed photo-transistor (not shown) upon which is formed a stationary image of the bottom by a moving lens Fig. 3 (not shown). Signals from the photo-transistor and those from a mechanical gauge sensing the neck of the bottle are stored in the memory device.
