Abstract

1,098,047. Abrading. HARMAN BROS. Ltd. Dec. 8, 1966 [Dec. 9, 1965], No. 52187/65. Heading B3D: Apparatus for polishing articles 22 having an external surface which is of substantially circular cross-section comprises a rotatable polisher 11 adapted to be driven, a support 12 for an article which permits the article to freely rotate about an axis angled with respect to the axis of rotation of the polisher whereby, during polishing, the polisher rotates the articles, the support being mounted on a bed 10 relatively movable with respect to the polisher. The bed 10 is reciprocable on slides beneath the mop and the bed and mop are continuously reciprocated in a direction parallel to the axis of the mop. A plurality of supports 12 are mounted on the bed, and each support has a stub axle rotatably supporting a carrier on which a core carrying the article is mounted. The axes of the axles are preferably inclined at 20 degrees to the direction of movement of the bed. During polishing, the rotation of the mop rotates the articles and also acts to retain the articles on the supports. The reciprocation of the mop and bed are out of phase with one another. The articles may be conical or frusto-conical, the axes of the supports then being inclined to the bed.
