Abstract

1,097,952. Gas-tight doors. GESELLSCHAFT FUER KERNFORSCHUNG m.b.H. April 13, 1965 [April 16, 1964], No. 15703/65. Heading F2P. Two containers 1 and 2 have openings which can be brought into a position of correspondence to be connected with each other, the said openings each having a cover consisting of two parts 3 and 4, 11 and 12 compressed together by springs 7, 15 on pins 8, 16 so as to compress sealing rings 6, 14 in peripheral grooves formed between the cover parts, each into gas-tight contact with a wall on its respective container. A device is provided whereby the two cover assemblies may be pressed together when they have been brought to the position of correspondence so that the outer surface of each is protected by the other against contact with any radio-active substances stored in the containers. The device comprises a piston 17 slidable in a cylinder 18 on the cover-part 12 which, when in position, is located in an opening 9 in the cover-part 3. The piston can be raised in the cylinder 18 by operation of a lever 32, connected to the piston by way of a rod 29, a member 25 with a cam groove 26 and a pin 27, so that cams 23 on hooks 20 move into a recess 24 permitting the hooks to pivot outwards so that grooves 19 in them engage with the sides of the recess 9 in the cover-part 3. The cover-part assemblies are thereby locked together and can be withdrawn together because in this position the mutually facing surfaces of the cover-parts 3 and 12 press on the heads of the pins 16 and 8 respectively to compress the springs 15 or 7 to allow the cover-parts of each cover to separate and release its sealing ring 6 or 14 from the wall of its container.
