Abstract
A process for etching an aluminium surface comprises treating it with an aqueous alkali-metal hydroxide base solution containing up to 10% (based on the hydroxide) of at least one polyhydroxy compound sequestering agent in the presence of water-hardness metal salts or other etch-inhibiting metal salts which would reduce the etch rate compared with pure solutions, the solution having added thereto a sequestering agent containing at least one iminodiacetic acid group in an amount of at least 0.25 g/l. (e.g. 0.25 - 5 g/l.) to counteract the effect of the etch inhibiting salts. The polyhydroxy compound is a polyhydric alcohol of the formula CH2OH (CHOH)a CH2OH wherein a is at least 2, a starch of the formula (C6H10O5)x an acid of the formula CO2H (CHOH)b CH2OH wherein b is at least 4, gum arabic, an acid of the formula CO2H (CHOH)c CO2H wherein c is at least 3 or an alkali metal salt of one of these acids. The iminodiacetic containing compound may be ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid, nitrilo triacetic acid or diethylene triamine pentacetic acid. The solution may be obtained by diluting a concentrate containing .NaOH.300 - 400 parts by weight .iminodiacetic acid. .compound.5 - 20 parts by weight .polyhydroxy com-. .pound.5 - 20 parts by weight the balance being water to 1,000 parts by weight
