An article spacing device 9, e.g. for discharging articles 6 from a conveyer 2 one at a time, comprises a member 10 having an article conveying surface 12, the member 10 being pivoted at 14 for movement between a raised position in which a nose 20 stops articles 6 from leaving the conveyer 2 and a lowered position in which articles can pass on to the device. The member 10 is moved by a pneumatic, hydraulic or electromagnetic device 16, and sensing means 18 which may be a pneumatic roller valve or limit switch, or a photo-electric cell or sonic detector, is provided for sensing the presence of an article 6a on the member 10 and actuating the device 16 to raise the member 10. The latter may be lowered by a timing device or a manually operated switch. The conveyer may be a flow rack, shoot, gravity or powered conveyer.
