Abstract

The invention relates to the preparation of cyclopentano - o - olnantholactam of formula <FORM:1097718/C2/1> or <FORM:1097718/C2/2> via Beckmann rearrangement of oximes derived from cyclopentanocycloheptanone (2-keto - bicyclo - [5,3,0] - decane). In various aspects:- Cyclopentanocycloheptanone is prepared by heating cyclododecanol-6-one-1 in the presence of a dehydration catalyst comprising a dehydrating metal oxide other than aluminium oxide, metal hydroxide, metal carbonate, metal acetate, organic acid, CaCl2, amalgamated zinc sheet or soda lime. Any 1,6-epoxycyclodecene-1 formed may be hydrolysed with acid to cyclododecanol-6-one-1 and recycled. Cyclopentenocycloheptanone (2 - keto - bicyclo - [5,3,0] - decene - 1(7)), either formed by the above reaction or otherwise, is hydrogenated to cyclopentanocycloheptanone. Acid conditions give mainly cis-product and alkaline conditions mainly trans-. Cis-trans cyclopentanocycloheptanone oxime mixtures and in trans-cyclopentano-o -lenantholactam mixtures are separated into isomers by fractional recrystallization. Various isomeric forms of cyclopentano-o -olnantholactam are claimed per se.
