Abstract
The invention comprises benzofuran derivatives of the general Formula II <FORM:1025563/C2/1> wherein R1 is benzyloxy, R2 is C1 to C5 alkyl and R3 is hydrogen, a carbethoxy group or an acyl group derived from a C1 to C5 aliphatic or aromatic carboxylic acid which is optionally substituted by hydroxy, C1 to C5 alkoxy, aralkoxy, amino or C1 to C5 alkyl, and the hydrochlorides thereof. They may be prepared by converting a compound of the general Formula I <FORM:1025563/C2/2> into the corresponding acid chloride, transforming said acid chloride into the corresponding benzofuran-2-diazoketone by reaction with diazomethane, converting the diazoketone into the corresponding benzo-furan-2-acetic acid amide by reaction with a silver compound-ammonia mixture, reducing said amide with an alkali metal aluminium hydride to the corresponding b -aminoethylbenzofuran, isolating the latter as the hydrochloride or transforming it into the corresponding 2-(b -acylaminoethyl)-benzofuran by reaction with a carboxylic acid or into a compound of Formula II, wherein R3 is carbethoxy by reaction with ethyl chloroformate. The formation of the acid chloride from the compound of Formula I is preferably effected using thionyl chloride in dimethylformamide. Specified silver compounds for use in the silver compound-ammonia mixture are silver oxide and nitrate.
