A device for applying an impact force such as for use in driving in nails or striking a pick comprises a hammer 6 slidably mounted in a guide member 1, the hammer being urged by a first spring 5 into contact with the nail or other article and retracted to its rest position by a second spring 7. The guide member 1 is slidable on a handle 2 and is provided with a projection. 4 to which one of the ends of each spring 5, 7 is attached the other ends being attached to the hammer 6 and a retaining pawl 9 respectively. In operation, upon pressing the front end of the guide member against a workpiece the handle is move towards the latter thereby loading the spring 5. At the end of the stroke the projection 4 abuts the end 10a of a wire 10 attached to the pawl thereby releasing it andso allowing the hammerto strike a nail; a number of nails may be mounted in a magazine which may be pressed on to the forward end of the guide member. In a modification the handle may be replaced by a sleeve adapted to slide over the guide member. The end of the guide member may be arranged to be mounted in a hollow member 22, Fig. 9, secured to a support 20 and in which a driver 31 is slidable, the driver being adapted to be struck by the hammer; individual nails are held in spring clips 28, 29 or by magnets.
