Abstract

Sheets or films formed from plastics materials in the mass and composite materials obtained from such sheets or films are dyed or printed by applying an aqueous padding liquor or print paste containing a dye or dyes in solution in an organic solvent, a thickening agent and an assistant which, with water which may contain additives forms a two-phase liquid system with a miscibility gap and thereafter heating to fix the dye. The materials to be dyed may be extruded films and sheets which may contain fillers or may be reinforced by fibres, e.g. cotton, rayon, acetate, triacetate, polyester, polyamide or acrylic fibres; the specified plastic sheets being of polyurethane, polyester, polyvinyl or -vinylidene chloride and polyamide, including polyurethane foam. Numbers of suitable polar and non-polar organic solvents are specified as are suitable assistants and dyes which may be from a large number of specified dyestuff classes. The dye liquor may be applied by padding, printing, brushing, spraying or flow-coating. The fixation may be achieved by steaming at 100-130 DEG C, by contact with a hot surface at 120-180 DEG C, by heating in dry air at 160-220 DEG C or by infra-red radiation. Examples are given of dyeing imitation leathers are given.
