Abstract

1,097,131. Gas blast switches. ENGLISH ELECTRIC CO. Ltd. Nov. 9, 1964 [Nov. 16, 1963], No. 45347/63. Heading H2B. The main interrupter and resistance switch contacts 10, 35 of a gas-blast circuit breaker are coupled to pistons 13, 36 respectively, movable in cylinders 14, 30 by compressed gas supplied through valves so that the main switch is closed before the resistor switch, the contacts being in gas-filled enclosures which are sealed both when the contacts are open and when they are closed. The breaker is opened by unlatching a rod 73 which, under a spring 74, moves to change-over a valve 82. This supplies compressed gas through a line 87 to open a blast valve 27, venting the interiors 23, 55 of the nozzle-shaped contacts 10, 35 and also cylinder 14 so that the gas in line 86 moves piston 13 to open the main contacts 9, 10. In this movement a contact biasing toggle 16, 19 is moved overcentre and pulls a rod 80 to reset valve 82 and also operates a valve 70 to actuate a shuttle valve 42 to vent the cylinder 30 of the resistor switch. Since a line 56 is also vented through the blast valve the piston 60 of a delay valve 57 moves slowly downwards eventually connecting to other side of piston 36 to the gas supply to open the resistor switch 34, 35. To reclose, the rod 73 is pulled down, changing over a valve 81 to vent lines 64, 86 to close the main contacts 9, 10 and, after pressure in line 56 has moved the piston 60, to vent line 69 to close the resistor switch.
