Abstract

White quartz powder is produced from quartz-containing sand by mixing the sand with substantially 1% of its weight of water and with an alkali metal salt, heating a uniformly deep layer of the mixture, which is suitably constrained to prevent it flowing, to a temperature of substantially 1,200 DEG C. and subsequently grinding the mixture. The uniform layer is preferably 3 cms. deep. In a preferred embodiment sodium carbonate is mixed with the sand and heating is effected with the layer of mixture on burning trays in a chamber oven or in a tunnel kiln.
