Abstract

An absorbent article, for example a baby's napkin or pilch, having a high liquid retentivity comprises a cellulose ether capable of swelling in water to form a colloid and thus to absorb a considerable amount of liquid. The cellulose ether is distributed in granular or powdered, non-fibrous form between layers of a cellulose product, for example between layers of paper or of carded cellulose fibres. The cellulose ether may be methyl ethyl cellulose, hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose or a carboxy alkyl cellulose (or a salt thereof) in which the carboxy alkyl groups contain up to 4 carbon atoms, for example carboxymethyl cellulose (or its sodium or potassium salt). Mixtures of cellulose ethers may be used.ALSO:An absorbent article having a high liquid retentivity comprises a cellulose ether capable of swelling in water to form a colloid and thus to absorb a considerable amount of liquid. The cellulose ether is distributed in granular or powdered, non-fibrous form between layers of a cellulose product, for example between layers of paper or of carded cellulose fibres. The cellulose ether may be methyl ethyl cellulose having a degree of substitution between 19% and 30% or hydroxypropyl methyl cellulose having a degree of substitution between 4% and 12%, or a carboxy alkyl cellulose (or a salt thereof) in which the carboxy alkyl groups contain up to 4 carbon atoms, for example carboxy methyl cellulose (or its sodium or potassium salt) having a degree of substitution at least of 13%. Mixtures of cellulose ethers may be used. The absorbent article may be a tampon or sanitary towel. Alternatively, the absorbent article may be used when in a wetted state; as exemplified, a cellulose ether was applied to cotton wool which then was soaked with aqueous boric acid solution to form a compress which was covered with gauze.
