Abstract

1,096,633. Brake discs. FORD MOTOR CO. Ltd. Jan. 31, 1966, No. 4090/66. Heading F2E. In order to dissipate heat, a brake disc is formed with a hollow space or spaces 9, which is or are filled with a substance, such as sodium, that is solid at atmospheric temperatures but fluid at disc working temperatures, and with air-cooling passages 17, each of which extends through opposing radial walls 1, 3 and through said space or between said spaces. In the embodiment shown, said passages are formed by tubes welded into said opposing walls whereas in the embodiment of Fig. 3 (not shown), the passages are formed during casting of the disc. In both embodiments, a single annular space extends around the disc. In a further embodiment, Figs. 4, 5 and 6 (not shown), a plurality of separate spaces are formed within the disc, the air-cooling passages extending between adjacent spaces.
