Abstract

1477924 Cooling brake discs AUTOMOTIVE PRODUCTS Ltd 11 March 1975 [13 March 1974] 11196/74 Addition to 1413520 Heading F4U [Also in Division F2] A hollow brake disc 55 is mounted at one end of a limb 54 which contains passages 69, 67 for respectively supplying a coolant to and receiving it from the interior of the disc. The disc contains a circumferentially continuous chamber 62 subdivided by partitions 63 into sections 64, 65, 66<SP>1</SP> the central one of which is connected to passage 69 and the others to passage 67; the opposite ends of the passage communicate with a finned heat exchanger 71. In operation, rotation of the hub and disc assembly and the heat generated by application of pads to the disc cause the coolant, e.g. water, to circulate in a closed vaporization condensation cycle. Partitions 63 are flexible and hollow and contain air or a low freezing point liquid to accommodate expansion of the coolant should freezing occur. Passages 67 are of rectangular cross-section and of greater area than passages 69. In the embodiment of Fig. 1, not shown, both sets of passages are circular, the heat exchanger consists of three inter-connected annular chambers each constructed of stacked rings with inter posed fins, the disc is of multipart, internally ribbed construction and the partitions are not hollow.
