Abstract

1,096,626. Sealing arc furnace electrodes. UNITED COKE & CHEMICALS CO. Ltd. March 17, 1965 [March 17, 1964], No. 11225/64. Heading H5H. A dust seal in an arc furnace having a reciprocatable cylindrical electrode 15, comprises a support 3 with a circular opening for the passage of the electrode and a ring of elements 13 pivotally suspended to present a substantially circular face to the electrode; the elements when freely hanging bound a circle smaller than the electrode and their lower edges are curved about their pivotal axes to sweep closely over the surface 10 of the support. A seal in a furnace roof 1 comprises eight groups of sector-shaped elements, each element being freely suspended from a framework 9, 10 attached to a water-cooled ring 4 movable in a dished aperture 2 in the roof. Dust accumulating between the elements is removed by compressed air or inert gas supplied through pipes 16, 17. The elements have a flat or wedge shaped cross-section and are made of metal or alumina bonded with Al phosphate.
