Abstract

1,096,497. Adjusting vehicle height. MOULTON DEVELOPMENTS Ltd. Dec. 8, 1966 [Dec. 15, 1965], No. 53241/65. Heading B7D. An extensible strut 30 which transmits the wheel sustained load between a wheel suspension arm 20 and a spring 10 of a vehicle, includes a screw jack rotatable by an electric motor 45, housed within the strut 30, through a reduction gear-box 34 to extend or contract the strut. The electric motor 45 and the equivalent motor on the other side of the vehicle are energized by a switch at the centre of a light transverse rod connecting the trailing arms 20 on both sides of the rear of the vehicle in response to overall loading at the rear of the vehicle and not to roll movements to maintain the vehicle body height constant. Delay means may be incorporated to prevent response to minor road irregularities and/or the mechanism may operate when a vehicle door is opened or the driver actuates an overriding control. The spring 10 is a combined rubber spring and hydraulic displacer unit connected through a pipe 18 with a similar unit at the front of and on the same side of the vehicle.
