Abstract

994,113. Motor vehicles. CHALLENGECOOK BROS. Inc. May 29, 1963 [May 31, 1962; Sept. 18, 1962], No. 21468/63. Headings B7D and B7H. A vehicle including a load-carrying body has pivotally attached thereto a wheeled frame extension or trailer which is urged rearwardly and downwardly from the body by one or more hydraulic cylinders whereby part of the body load is transferred to the trailer wheels. In Fig. 4 a motor vehicle carrying a tipping body 300 is provided with a trailer 310 comprising a framework pivotally connected to each side of the body and carrying a pair of wheels 50 urged into contact with the ground by hydraulic cylinders 332, the cylinder being double-acting whereby the trailer 310 may be raised clear of the ground when not required or to prevent obstruction of load discharge from the body 300. The trailer wheels 50 may be mounted at each end of a short axle connected to the trailer about a vertical pivot, or they may be individually pivoted and interconnected by a tie-rod. The wheels may be steerable by hydraulic mechanism controlled by a steering wheel on the trailer or by the normal steering mechanism of the vehicle. Fig. 11 shows an arrangement wherein the hydraulic cylinder actuating the trailer is controlled by a valve 128 and is connected to a hydraulic accumulator 140 containing a gaseous element 142, whereby the hydraulic action is cushioned and the wheels 50 maintain contact with uneven ground. In another embodiment, Fig. 1, wherein the invention is applied to a vehicle carrying a drum 60 for mixing the load in transit, the trailer carries a loading hopper 70, a discharge accumulator 80 and a discharge shoot 90 which are moved into position adjacent the drum opening when the trailer is raised. In a further embodiment wherein the invention is applied to a motor bus, the trailer is enclosed within a housing.
