Abstract

1,096,467. Rotary rakes. PARKER SWEEPER CO. Dec. 24, 1964 [Dec. 27, 1963], No. 52451/64. Heading A1F. A rotary rake for lawns comprises an open-bottomed frame 220 carrying opposite side-members 224, 226 and a cover 248, the frame being mounted on a pair of non- driven wheels 232 and having a rotatable tined reel 54 which is disposed transversely between the side-members beneath the cover and is driven by a motor 255 carried by the frame, handles 265 being provided to guide the device over the ground. The reel comprises an axle 52 and two series of shafts 100, 102 equally spaced around it. One series of shafts 100 carries the coiled portions 106 of tines 104, the other series 102 having hooked around them the bent-over ends 114 of the tines. The tines extend more or less tangentially of the reel and have bent-over free-ends 110. Engagement of the tines with the turf propels the machine forwardly and causes matted cuttings to be propelled upwardly and rearwardly by the recoil of the tines on leaving the ground. Obstructions cause the tines to be bent back so that the parts 108 contact the shafts 102. The machine may have a third wheel or roller 269 mounted on the front of the cover 248. The wheels 232 are adjustable in height either by moving their axle 228 into alternative holes 229 in the side-members, or, in a modification (Fig. 5, not shown), by the wheels 232 being carried on cranks rotationally adjustable about the axis of the axle 228.
