Abstract

1,096,350. Roller conveyers. ALVEY CONVEYOR MANUFACTURING CO. Aug. 23, 1965 [Sept. 14, 1964], No. 36077/65. Heading B8A. A live roller conveyer comprises transport rollers 2 driven by the upper run of a belt 7 which would lie in a plane below the plane of the lower edges of the rollers 2 except that it is lifted into driving engagement with the transport rollers 2 by load compensators 15. Each load compensator comprises a pair of hangers 11 rotatably journalled from side rails 1 and supporting a yoke 12 on pivot pins 13. Each yoke 12 carries an idler roller 14 and an adjustable counterweight 17 which biases the belt 7 into frictional driving engagement with the rollers 2. The load compensators 15 are initially adjusted for a usual conveyer load, thus establishing the amount of frictional loading for normal operation. Under the influence of heavier loads or load stoppage the transport rollers 2 have a higher than normal frictional load which increases the drag on the belt 7. The upper run of the belt becomes more taut and the tensioning is absorbed by the load compensators 15 to afford a uniform frictional drive. The load compensators 15 provide self-centring of the belt 7, since when the belt 7 runs off centre as at 7a, the resultant differential tilting of the sides of the yoke 12 introduces a centring force.
