Abstract
A bath for the electro-deposition of chromium plate comprises an acidic hexavalent chromium solution in which is dissolved strontium sulphate and at least one fluoro carbon sulphonic or/and fluoro carbon phosphonic acid, said bath also containing undissolved strontium sulphate. The fluoro carbon sulphonic and fluoro carbon phosphonic acids used may comprise short chain, non-surface active acids, e.g. CF3SO3H; CF3CH2SO3H; CF3CF2SO3H; CF3CF2CF2SO3H; HCF2CF2SO3H; HCF Cl CF2SO3H; H(CF2CF2)nPO(OH)2; H(CF Cl CF2)nPO(OH)2 where n = 1, 2, or 3; fluoro-para-methyl-, or -ethyl-cyclohexyl sulphonic acids; perfluoro-cyclohexyl meta-disulphonic acid; perfluoro-p-methyl or ethyl cyclohexyl sulphonic acids &c. The bath may also contain strontium chromate, strontium carbonate or boric acid. The ratio of hexavalent chromium (calculated as CrO3) to that of sulphate ions may, under various conditions be varied from 75:1 to 400:1; the concentration of hexavalent chromium may be from 75 to 500 gr/litre, and that of fluoro-carbon-phosphonic and -sulphonic acids from 0.5 to 30 gr/litre. With a ratio of chromate to sulphate ions of from 120:1 to 400:1 the strontium sulphate may be replaced in part by at least one other sulphate, the bath still containing undissolved strontium sulphate. If fluoro-carbon-sulphonic acids containing a perfluorocyclohexyl ring are used in concentrations of 5-10 gr/l they may also eliminate the chromic acid mist evolved during plating. Reference has been directed by the Comptroller to Specification 758,025.
