Abstract

1,095,877. Piezo-electric generators. S. H. NEWMAN. May 21, 1965 [May 25, 1964], No. 21606/65. Heading H2A. [Also in Division F4] In a gas-fueled lighter the gas is ignited by a spark produced by compression of a Piezoelectric cell 33. The lighter comprises a fuel e.g. butane reservoir 14 provided with a liftable valve 15 and nozzle 16 above which is situated a burner 18 comprising a gas-air mixer. The valve 15 is opened by a pivoted lever 29 operated by partially pressing down a lever 31, and the escaping gas passes through nozzle 16 to a passage 19 in barrier 18 where it mixes with air entering ports 21 and 22 forming a 1 : 9 fuel gas/air mixture. When the lever 31 is fully depressed the nozzle 16 enters the opening 21 thereby partially cutting off the air supply. The Piezo-electric element 34 is lined with insulation 35 and held in a U-shaped metal support 36 pivoted to the lighter casing on a pivot 37. When the lever 31 is depressed a cam 38 also carried on the pivot 37 bears against a plug 39 in contact with the element 34 and an electro-motive force is produced therein. The discharge from the cell is conducted to a spark gap 42 above the burner 18. A spring 43 returns the lever 31 to its normal position. In an alternative form of mechanism, Fig. 6 (not shown), the cell 34 is compressed between a support 47 and a press plug 39<SP>1</SP> by depressing the jointed ends of levers 49 and 50 by an overcentre cam 46 on a lever 44.
