Abstract
1,163,300. Gas-fueled lighters. MANSEI KOGYO K.K. 8 Nov., 1966 [11 Nov., 1965; 12 March, 1966 (3); 26 May, 1966], No. 50051/66. Heading F4F. [Also in Division H2] A gas-fueled lighter comprises a single piezoelectric element 13, or an additional element 26, within an insulating plastics sleeve 27, the element(s) and a metallic head 23 being maintained under compression by a bar 31 which acts to concentrically guide a hammer 14 relative to the elements. A backing plate 28 and components 26, 13, 23 and 31 are all retained within a rectangular frame 116 which is mounted between base 17 and top wall 10f. In operation of the lighter button 16 is depressed and stem 121 lowers a hook 37 pivoted to it and tensions a return spring 122. As hook 37 is depressed it will contact a sleeve 34 attached to the hammer and cause the hammer to slide down bar 31, compressing spring 29. Hook 37 is normally urged to remain in contact with sleeve 34 by a wire spring 124 but as the hammer reaches the end of its travel spring 29 acting on the hammer overcomes spring 124 and the hook is forced to release the hammer which then moves up with spring 29 and strikes the piezo-electric assembly. A voltage generated cause a spark between electrodes 110 and 111. Electrode 110 is connected to the piezo element(s) via a conductor 109 which contains a resistor 108. Electrode 111 is connected to the piezo element(s) via a support arm 114 and lighter casing 10. As button 16 is depressed a pivoted lever 43 raises and opens fuel valve 11. Burner nozzle 20 is surrounded by a flame guide 19 and combustion air is drawn in through holes 10c in the casing. When button 16 is released it is returned to its initial position by spring 122. The compressive force exerted on the piezo element(s) by the bar 31 can be varied by rotating a nut 32 threaded on its lower end and in contact with flame 116. In a modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), a gas distributer fitted on to burner nozzle 20 is formed with main and auxiliary gas openings, and the spark electrodes are situated adjacent the auxiliary opening.
