Abstract

An oligomeric amino-alcohol having a mean molecular weight of from 180-300 and which is obtained by oligo-condensation of diethanolamine or mixtures thereof with mono- and/or triethanolamine is esterified with 2 to 5 mols. fatty acid of C10 to C20 chain length per mole of the oligomeric amino alcohol and the product converted to a quaternary ammonium salt which has application in laundry retexturing agents. The oligomerization of the diethanolamine which may contain up to 50% by weight of mono- or triethanolamine may be effected by heating to 200-270 DEG C. in the presence of an alkali hydroxide or a tungsten, thorium or aluminium oxide or by heating to 200-300 DEG C. in the absence of a catalyst and an inert gas may be present. The esterification may be carried out by direct esterification or by trans-esterification of the oligomer, e.g. with a fatty acid methyl or ethyl ester in the presence of an alkali metal alcoholate as catalyst and the fatty acid may be derived from a natural fat such as tallow, coconut oil, palm nut oil, colza oil or cottonseed oil or it may be a hardened or synthetic fatty acid. The quaternary salt may be obtained by reacting the ester with a quaternating agent such as methyl or ethyl chloride, ethylene chlorhydrin or chloracetic acid. The quaternization may be partial or complete but generally at least 50% of the ester is converted to the quaternary ammonium salt.ALSO:Textiles are treated with a retexturing agent containing a quaternary ammonium salt of an ester of an oligomeric amino alcohol with 2 to 5 moles of a fatty acid of C10 to C20 chain length per mole of the oligomeric alcohol, the latter having a molecular weight of from 180-300 and being obtained by oligo-condensation of diethanolamine or of mixtures p thereof with mono- and/or triethanolamine. For use the agent is diluted with water, generally employing 0.05 to 1 gram active substance per litre of water and a bath ratio of from 1:4 to 1:30 and the treatment of textiles is suitably effected during rinsing after the washing process proper. The textiles may be of vegetable, animal or synthetic fibres, e.g. cotton fabric or cell wool yarn. Additives and fillers such as sodium-sulphate, -chloride or -acetate, dyestuffs, perfuming agents, optical brighteners and organic solvents such as C1-C3 alkanols, glycols, polyglycols and ketones may be present in the treating bath.ALSO:A stable emulsion is obtained by dispersing in water a quaternary ammonium salt of an oligomeric amino alcohol esterified with 2 to 5 mols of a fatty acid of C10 to C20 chain length for each mol of the oligomeric amino alcohol, the latter being obtained by oligocondensation of diethanolamine or mixtures thereof with mono- and/or triethanolamine. The quaternary ammonium salts may be present in amounts of 3% to 15% by weight of the emulsion. The emulsion may additionally contain small amounts of polyglycols, polyglycol ethers or fatty acid alkanolamides or neutral salts; e.g. sodium sulphate, chloride or acetate, dyestuffs, perfume, optical brighteners, and organic solvents such as glycols, polyglycols, ketones, and C1 - C3 alkanols.
